South Shore

This is one of my earliest color photographs, taken in 1989. I had wanted to take a photo of this particular stretch of shoreline for quite some time, but needed the right light for the shot. On this afternoon a front had gone through, and I could see that three days of dreary, rainy weather were about to give way to clear air and bright sunshine. As the clouds began to break up, I made a mad dash for my location - clear across the Island and then down a three-mile dirt road, all the while racing against the clock and against the clouds. When I arrived at the beach I had just enough time to make three exposures as the clouds receded toward the horizon and the last rays of late-afternoon light bathed the beach grass with a warm, reddish glow. An original print of this image once hung in the White House.
