The stretch of beach opposite Farm Pond in Oak Bluffs has been in constant flux for the 35 or so years that I’ve been photographing it. This dock was originally the means of access to the beach across a channel which connected Farm Pond to Harthaven Harbor. In this photo the beach had eroded to the point that there was no longer a channel to cross. And today, the only thing that remains of this dock are perhaps a few pilings. I shot this at a slow shutter speed with my camera on a tripod. In the darkroom I burned in the sky to a pure black, which I realize is totally unrealistic, but I like the resulting stark but lonely drama it gives the scene.
