Mentorship Student Portfolios
Workshops: Mentorship 2014-2015
The past year was one of transition as I moved from bustling NYC and a hectic work schedule to begin a new life chapter as a photographer in Long Island’s NorthFork region. NoFo, as we call it, is a sleepy oasis of farms and vineyards surrounded by beautiful shorelines and marine life. I was drawn here to be close to the shore, as I always find it soothingly tranquil and good for the soul.
My work is a collection of seascapes of places I pass everyday or visited while traveling. Why is it we can walk on a beach and immediately leave all our stress behind? What it is about the simple nature of sand, water and sky that calm or excite us? With my photography, I like to explore how these elements connect and affect our mood – in different weather conditions, time of day, or when objects are introduced.
As I reflect on many of my seascapes, I can see my new life as a photographer. The horizon may be somewhat uncertain, yet I travel there happy and in peace.
My experience with the Mentorship:
I joined Alison and Sue’s Mentorship program to help me take better photos, and I was surely one of the least experienced of the group. I really had little idea what makes a good photograph or how to edit my own work.
I learned so much about technique and Lightroom, which now allows me to capture, edit and critique my images. However, the greatest gift Alison and Sue gave me was a sense of what it means to be “in the zone” – to work, think, and market yourself like an artist. Through calls with these dedicated women, I began to develop my own style and vision for my photography, and a confidence that was missing before this program. Sharing your work in the Masterminds (at the two retreats) opens your eyes to the tremendous possibilities of photography. The warmth and support from Alison, Sue and fellow photographers is an experience I will never forget. I hope to know these artists and collaborate with them for a lifetime.
