Alison teaches on Martha's Vineyard in the fall (the best season for photographing the island), for the Alison Shaw Photographic Workshops. This year, the workshop will take place at Summercamp, an historic hotel overlooking the Oak Bluffs Harbor. We encourage you to stay in the hotel, which is an easy walk from restaurants and beaches. On Saturday morning, we'll close out the week with a show of your best work, which is open to the public. Your images will be projected on a huge HD screen at the Martha's Vineyard Film Center – a luxurious state-of-the-art theater in Vineyard Haven.
During the workshop, days begin early — out in the field capturing the magic light of dawn and sunrise — followed by a hearty breakfast at a favorite local restaurant. During the week, we divide our time between the classroom and the field. Mid-day is classroom time. The emphasis in the classroom will be critique of new work, lecture and discussion (topics include getting great color, finding your own creative vision, exposure, digital tips, color temperature, composition, and fine art prints), and individual feedback. Late afternoons, students are back out with their cameras, exploring some of Alison's favorite locations: the dramatic clay cliffs at Aquinnah, secluded private beaches, the brightly-colored Victorian gingerbread architecture of Oak Bluffs, rolling Up-Island farmland, and the picturesque working fishing village of Menemsha. Evenings are spent photographing sunset and dusk, editing new images, and sharing dinner together over an ongoing informal discussion of photography. On Friday night, we host a group dinner in one of our favorite restaurants.
