For the second time in 2016, Alison is excited to be trading ocean, beaches, and cold weather for desert, cactuses (Sue thinks this should be cacti, but you get what Alison means...) and warm weather to teach a workshop this November. She'll be teaching a 5-day workshop for Madeline Island School of the Arts WEST, in Tucson, Arizona. The workshop will be held at the Tanque Verde Ranch, in the beautiful Rincon Mountains of southern Arizona, which was recently voted "Best Dude Ranch in Arizona.” Tanque Verde is situated on over 60,000 acres east of Tucson and borders Saguaro National Park. The breathtaking views of the Arizona desert landscape, fabulous sunsets, and warm climate provide ideal opportunities for photography.

This workshop is geared toward intermediate-level photographers shooting with a DSLR or mirrorless camera, who have a good understanding of exposure, camera control settings, digital work-flow, and your photo editing hardware and software. As with all of Alison's workshops, you will divide your time between the classroom and the field. Most of your field time is spent as a group, so each participant can receive hands-on help with planning and making photographs on location.

For those of you who have taken a workshop with Alison before on the Vineyard, you can expect this workshop to be a little less rigorous than the non-stop dawn-to-dusk routine. This means you'll have the opportunity to fully enjoy the amenities the ranch has to offer, as well as the warm weather and beauty of your surroundings. The food is terrific, as are the accommodations.

Alison will introduce you to some of her favorite shooting locations in the area, including Saguaro National Park (Saguaro West-Tucson Mountain District and Saguaro East-Rincon Mountain District), historic Mission San Xavier del Bac, Pima Air and Space Museum, and Old Tucson Studios, a western movie set dating back to 1939.

An added bonus of this workshop is there is so much great subject matter right there on the ranch – the Old Homestead, the horses and their wranglers, Lake Cochran, and miles of trails through desert/mountain landscape.

The workshop will be geared around a shoot-edit-critique format. Editing will take place in the classroom, to accommodate individual hands-on help from Alison as you download your images and edit them in Adobe Lightroom. A daily critique of your new work is the centerpiece of your workshop experience. Alison will also discuss topics relating to the day’s shoots. Alison's primary focus is on color and light, and how they can magically transform the most mundane subject matter. She will also touch on such varied subjects such as learning to see in new ways, digital tips and tricks, gear, exposure, white balance, and composition. Alison swears by Adobe Lightroom, and will share her LR workflow during the workshop.
