Workshop Description
Alison teaches a week-long summer workshop, "The Colors of Maine," in the small, coastal town of Rockport, at the Maine Photographic Workshops. Students will photograph the Maine coast — colorful lobster buoys, wooden schooners, seaside gardens, the rocky shoreline and picturesque lighthouses. There may be an excursion to the island of Monhegan or to the Olson House, the setting for Andrew Wyeth's most famous painting, "Christina's World". During the week, we divide our time between the classroom and the field. We're usually out with our cameras as a group in the early morning and again in the late afternoon and early evening. The emphasis during classroom time will be critique of new work, lecture and discussion (topics include getting great color, exposure, digital tips, becoming more creative with your photography, color temperature, composition, and fine art prints), and individual feedback. After dinner each evening there are slide lectures by visiting masters, and at week's end there is a lobster dinner followed by a screening of the week's work. The workshop campus is a 20-acre complex just a short walk from Rockport Harbor. The facilities include a 19th-century farmhouse where meals are served, a new imaging center, and an extensive library. Besides the location and impressive campus, what sets this apart from the workshop Alison teaches on Martha's Vineyard is the opportunity to be part of the larger community offered by the Maine Photographic Workshops. Participants enjoy excellent home-cooked meals with the camaraderie of many other students, and an impressive lineup of photo, film and digital instructors.
