Workshop Description
This is an opportunity to become familiar Venice, its architecture, history, alleys and waterways with your camera. Venice is magical at any time of year—but by mid-April spring has arrived with flowers and changeable weather, providing a variety of lighting conditions for photographers. We will meet photographers from Venice, learn about Venice’s art and image-making traditions, its history and current problems with raising water levels.
Alison will discuss her own photography and that of other photographers who have worked in this visually exciting city. She will lecture on methodology, and the use of color and composition to create compelling images. As we progress through the ten days, Alison will work with each student in the creation on their personal photographic essay, multimedia story or book.
During formal class time and in the field she will explore:
- Acquiring new technical skills
- Developing a personal style
- Learning techniques to work more effectively in color
- Learning how to work with abstract imagery
- Improving compositions
- Learning how to use exposure to effect color and contrast
- Learning what cameras, lenses and accessories to use
- Learning how to present and market your fine art photos.

Each day includes field trips to parts of the city, visits to museums and galleries, cathedrals and plazas. This is not a guided tour of Venice, but an opportunity to follow your own interests. Expect to spend 4 to 6 hours each day photographing on your own, or with a fellow photographer. Each morning we review the previous day’s images, discuss color and composition, subject matter and each participant’s story. We will look at the work of others who have photographed this magical city. One of the goals of this workshop is to produce a series of compelling images that tell a story, while at the same time are improving technical and visual skills as you come to understand the visual storytelling process better. Toward the end of the ten days, students will work with Alison as they edit and sequence their images into a form for publishing: a book or section of a book, an on-line gallery, multimedia or web site. This is also an opportunity to come to know Venice in a deeply personal way as you shape a body of images into a visual presentation. |
